. . . I held the feather in the palm of my hand and stroked its long spine and brown filaments. It made my fingers tingle, don’t ask why. I managed to speak. ‘What are you, Mary? A witch, an angel or just some girl I met.’

Nothing about him has changed. Not his dark eyes, long dark hair, pale skin or his penetrating gaze. I’ve hoped he’d acquire a scar or some physical marking that betrays him for what he really is, but no such thing has happened . . . And even in the darkness, his eyes are looking right through me; I hate how he does that. He sits still and calm, but I feel the power in his presence.
